Foreword
November 16, 1996
Since this project started in early summer, many people and several robots have discovered this site, due largely to an
AP story printed by every newspaper in the free world - except my hometown's only one, commonly known as the Buffalo Snooze. Ironically, I was somewhat relieved that my neighbors didn't have to read the remark about my great-Grandfather, attributed to me, which quoted "He really was the Dave Barry of his time." Perhaps my memory fails, but I thought I was explaining the distribution of the original column when I said: "the column was syndicated, like Dave Barry's". In any case, thanks AP - it is heartening to know that a one-hundred year old story with neither violence, sex, nor scandal can still be viewed as newsworthy (except in Buffalo).
To date, over ten-thousand visitors have perused these pages, and at least eleven (including my mother) have said they look forward to the weekly column. To those eleven, I offer free admission. To the rest, a charge equivalent to US$ .007 shall be levied by way of impressing upon you the slogans and brands of the esteemed advertisers who's banners will soon grace the pages herein. And if you ten-thousand return, I'll buy a donkey with my $70 in ad revenues and try to further entertain you on David Letterman's Stupid Human-on-Donkey Tricks segment.
Many thanks to supporters of this effort, including Steven Haderlie, Rell Francis, and the Springville Herald, all of Springville, Utah; the Beloit (WI) Daily News; Bob Stepno and The NANDO Times of Raleigh, NC; David Kligman and the Associated Press, the San Jose Mercury News; Ted Majewski and Artimagery; DIMACC, Inc.; Frank P. and the Sweet Home Cafe; Ron Olsen, Gary McNamara of WBEN 930; Bob Borysczewski, Gary Gassman, and of course, family members involved with this project: Mary Russell, B.W. Woodward, Brian Russell, and Ben Woodward and family.
And thanks to all of you who visit here and enjoy this web site - please tell your friends about it, too!
As always, please feel free to share your
